Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my herding ball cover feel loose after inflating?

This is a very common question, and usually, the ball and cover are the right size.

When you start blowing up the ball, it might look small and the cover might feel loose. That’s okay! The ball needs more air before it stretches the cover and fills it up properly.

Think of it like blowing up a balloon. Just because it looks round doesn’t mean it’s full. You need to keep blowing air in until it feels firm and hard with no loose wrinkles of the cover. Bigger balls take more air and might feel harder to pump, that’s normal. Just keep going but make sure not to over inflate! Stop when there is no more wrinkles!

To make it easier, you can use an electric pump or go to a gas station to fill it faster. But be careful not to put too much air in about the pressure of 2 to 3 PSI is perfect.

Also, when you zip the cover, try zipping it halfway before the ball is all the way full, then finish zipping after you finish pumping. This helps the zipper stay strong.

If you still think the cover is too loose after pumping it fully, please send us a photo. We will happily help you check it.

Our herding balls for dogs is made to be safe for your dog to push around and play with. When it’s fully pumped up, it will roll well and be lots of fun.

How do I unzip the herding ball cover? The zipper seems stuck.

The herding ball cover uses a special zipper with an auto-locking system to keep it secure during intense play. If the zipper won’t budge, don’t worry! It’s likely just in its locked position. Here's how to safely unlock and unzip it:

1. Locate the zipper head - it's the small metal piece at the end of the zipper track.

2. Look closely and you’ll see a small hole on the side of the zipper head. Inside is a tiny latch that keeps the zipper locked.

3. Use the zipper tool included in your set to press into this hole. - Can’t find the tool? A ballpoint pen tip works just as well.

4. Gently press down into the hole to engage the latch inside.

5. While keeping the latch pressed, slowly slide the zipper head straight across the zipper track to begin unzipping.

6. Do not force it. Avoid using pliers or other tools, they can damage the zipper. Go slow and gentle, and the mechanism will release smoothly.

How do I know if I have the right size herding ball and cover?

Choosing the Right Herding Ball Size for Your Dog

Each herding ball and cover is carefully sized and color-coded to suit different dog breeds.

If the cover still feels loose after inflation, it may be due to underinflation. For best results, use an electric pump to fully and firmly inflate your ball.

Continue inflating until the ball is firm. If the cover remains loose, please send us photos and your order details so we can assist.

To ensure your dog gets the best experience, choose a ball size that matches their height while herding. When your dog is in a herding posture, their back should be straight and their head should not be bent down. If your dog’s head is dipping, the ball is likely too small.

Here are general size recommendations based on common American dog breeds:

  • 18" herding ball for small breeds like Corgis, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers
  • 22" and 25" Herding ball for medium breeds like Miniature Australian Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Border Collies, and Blue Heelers
  • 30" for large breeds like German Shepherds, Great Danes, Dobermans, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and also suitable for horses

Can I use a regular air pump or compressor to inflate the herding ball?

Yes, using an electric air pump, air compressor, or gas station air pump is highly recommended to quickly and easily inflate your herding ball. Manual pumps may work but can be slower. Air pressure of 2 to 3 PSI will be perfect!

Can I overinflate the herding ball? What is the correct pressure?

Overinflating your dog herding ball can cause damage. We recommend inflating to about 2 to 3 PSI. This pressure ensures the ball is firm enough to hold its shape and safe for your dog to play with.

Important Inflation & Care Tips for Your Herding Ball

Use an electric pump and inflate to 2–3 PSI until the ball is firm.

Close the zipper halfway before inflating, then zip fully and tuck it into the protective flap.

Always fully inflate before play. A soft ball can be bitten or popped.

Keep the ball out of direct sunlight, which can cause over-expansion and damage.

You can wash the cover by rinsing it with a hose and mild soap, air dry before using again.

Choose the right size: Your dog’s back should be straight and their head level while herding. If their head dips, the ball is too small.
