Herding Balls for Dogs
These balls are for dogs that prefer to push and chase balls than to play fetch and for dogs with herding instincts but no livestock in sight.
Herding balls are designed for dogs that enjoy the thrill of the chase, but in a slightly different way than traditional fetch. Instead of retrieving a ball, these dogs find joy in pushing, nudging, and maneuvering a large ball with their noses, mouths, paws, and even their bodies.
This style of play is particularly well-suited for:
- Dogs with herding instincts: Even if your dog doesn't have access to livestock, herding balls provide an outlet for their natural desire to herd and move objects.
- Energetic and athletic dogs: The physical exertion involved in pushing and maneuvering a large ball can be a fantastic way to tire out high-energy dogs.
How are herding balls made?
Herding balls are typically made from:
- Hard plastic: Durable and resistant to chewing, but may develop sharp edges over time.
- Dense rubber: Less prone to scratching, but may be chewed up by determined dogs.
- Soft, inflatable materials: Popular for their gentle nature, but can be punctured by enthusiastic chewers.
How big are herding balls?
It's crucial to choose a herding ball that's too large for your dog to pick up. This encourages them to use their bodies to move the ball, rather than simply carrying it around.
Rewarding Fun
Safety First:
- Avoid balls with handles. These can put unnatural strain on your dog's neck and back, potentially leading to injury.
- Consider your dog's size and play style. Small dogs may be at risk of injury from very hard balls.
- Soft, lightweight balls are generally gentler on teeth.
Finding the Right Fit:
- Experiment with different materials and sizes to find what your dog enjoys most.
- Race & Herd Herding Balls: Designed specifically for herding breeds, these balls are made from a tough yet soft material. They're lightweight, easy to maneuver, and safe for your dog's teeth.

1 month agoMy Aussie loves it!
I have tried a hard herding ball and my Aussie didn't seem to enjoy it and never played with it, so I wasn't sure if she'd enjoy this, but she absolutely loves it! By far her favorite toy! This ball is soft like a yoga ball but has a durable cover, and I think she prefers the softness over the hard material.

4 months agoBest herding ball on the market!
I was skeptical at first, especially after trying a few other brands that didn't hold up, but this herding ball for dogs is the real deal. The quality is far superior with stronger seams, a double sturdy zipper, and it doesn't deflate or tear like the others I've tried. My dog has been chasing it around non-stop!
